The 2015 Deaf West Theatre revival of Spring Awakening was an acclaimed Broadway production that reimagined the musical performed simultaneously in English and American Sign Language. Directed by Michael Arden, it featured deaf and hearing actors, with deaf actors’ lines voiced by hearing “doubles.” The set design incorporated a 19th-century German aesthetic, with projected text and illustrations making the play intelligible to both hearing and non-hearing audiences.
